lazy monday

Is there anything better than not having to go to work on a Monday?

Yesterday we celebrated my grandpa’s oldest brother’s 90th birthday, and I didn’t know how late it would get and since it included a 90 minute drive I took today off from work. I got home at around 7pm last night, which was not as late as I expected, but it was still so nice to sleep in today! I’ve been wearing leggings and a hoodie all day, watched TV on the couch (there really is nothing on TV during the day!) and just chilled.

Oh, and I made cookies!

I’ll take them to work with me tomorrow. I wanted to make some last week, but when I was about to get started I noticed that I had run out of flour (never thought that would happen…). And since I was already in my pj’s I couldn’t go to the store and so I put it off.

Hope you had a nice Monday, too! Only 4 more days till the weekend…

for me

So, I once sewed 2 patchwork quilts for my cousin’s twin boys, back in 2010. I haven’t done much sewing lately, but had bought a couple fat quarters when visiting the fabric market. I finally bought some fleece fabric and started cutting fabric squares for a quilt that’s gonna be for me!

The fabric in the “center” is a light mint with tiny white polka dots. I’m going for a girly, pink-and-mint, theme here. I’m also gonna use some leftover fabric from the other quilts that happens to be the same as the mint polka-dotted one, only in beige.

I used it for binding last time, but this time I’m gonna do things a little differently. I’ll only do 2 layers: The patchwork top layer, and the fleece on the back. I’ll sew them kinda like a pillow case; put them right sides together, sew around, leaving an opening for turning, then sewing around it again after turning it right sides out, then “quilting” it. I’m too lazy for binding, and I also don’t want it to be super thick, so a soft fleece seemed like a good choice for the back.

After cutting all my fat quarters I finally did some math and found out that the 235 squares that I already have are by far not enough: I need 450! So in addition to the beige polka-dotted fabric and the extra I have of the paisley, I think I’ll need to buy some more fabric. I’m thinking something gray, as the fleece is gray, but I haven’t decided on anything.

This will definitely be a multi-weekend project! Speaking of weekend, how was yours?

growing

I’m sorry I didn’t post on Friday or Monday, but I was way too tired. On Monday I helped a friend move by driving her and her pet rabbits to the new apartment. Turns out, I’m still super allergic to rabbits! My voice turned all weird and my throat was itching and my nose running, but that all quickly got better after I took two allergy pills. The downside to that is that they completely wiped me out! I could barely keep my eyes open and was still super tired yesterday.

I don’t have a lot today, but what I have is pictures of my green thumb in full effect. I might have acidentally killed my tomatoes, but all my flowers are doing great!

Most of my lavender is in bloom, and I don’t seem to be the only one loving it. I’ve spotted quite a few bees in it!

The weekend before last I went to a nursery with my mom and godmother and her daughter. I saw a beautiful agapanthus there, and they had this color-code system for pricing. The agapanthus had a black dot, which, judging by the signs everywhere, meant 5.50€. It seemed super cheap, but at the checkout we were told that the color codes don’t apply to all plants and the agapanthus would actually be around 15-20€. So I left it behind with a very sad face.

My godmother apparently felt sorry for me, cause she gave me one of hers!

I’ll have to take a new picture, since it has grown a lot already. It’s almost in bloom now, and my favorite part is that it’s a white one!

This hosta was also a gift from my godmother, when I moved in a year ago.

Love it! The smaller one was a gift from my mom and is also in bloom now.

As you can tell, it has been raining. The past two days have been nice and warm and sunny, but who knows how long that will last.

I bought a rose at IKEA a while ago. It didn’t look so good and I was sure it was dead, but look…

I’m telling you… green thumb! Haha!

I hope the same is gonna happen with this other rose I bought a while ago.

Or maybe I need to take some gardening lessons, who knows.

My boxwoods have been doing great though, as well as my olive trees. I cut those back before I moved them back outside cause my mom said it was gonna make them grow in stronger, and it worked!

I’ll do a complete balcony before-and-after post soon, cause obviously a lot has happened since I moved in.

Until then, have a happy 4th of July!

grocery store peonies

Exactly one week ago, I bought some peonies at the grocery store. They were 3 for 2.50€ and it said on the plastic that was wrapped around them that they’re guaranteed to last 5 days. Well, I’m happy to report that even 7 days later they are looking absolutely gorgeous!

I keep them on my nightstand. That’s always been a favorite spot for fresh flowers for me.

The light in the bedroom was not great, so I took them to the living room to snap some better pics.

I know I’m repeating myself… but boy do I love peonies! They’re my absolute number one favorite flowers ever!

I decided to keep 5 in the vase by my bed and one in another vase on my desk.

The vase is new-ish, and I love it. I think the peony is the perfect flower for it.

I often buy flowers at the grocery store, cause I love having fresh flowers around, but it can get pricey to buy them at the florist every time. I’ve only found peonies at the grocery store once or twice before, and I kinda regret not buying 3 more. Maybe I’ll be lucky next time and they have them again.
